Understanding the Markings on a Ruler

A standard ruler is 12 inches long (1 foot), but yours may be different—don’t worry, the method remains the same. If you're using a tape measure, that will work as well.

Now, let’s break down the lines on the ruler:

1. Whole Numbers (Inches) – The longest lines, marked with numbers.
2. Half-Inch Marks (½") – The second-longest lines.
3. Quarter-Inch Marks (¼", ¾") – Slightly shorter than the half-inch marks.
4. Eighth-Inch Marks (⅛", ⅜", ⅝", ⅞") – Even smaller lines.
5. Sixteenth-Inch Marks (1/16") – The smallest lines, used for precise measurements.

How to Measure Your Chair or Table Legs

1. Align the Ruler – Place the "0" mark at the edge of the chair or table leg.
2. Check the Closest Marking – Look at where the opposite edge of the leg lines up on the ruler.
3. Use the Largest Accurate Measurement – If the leg lines up with ½", use that. If it aligns with 3/8", use that measurement instead.
